Our Mission & How YOU Can Help by Being 1 of 100!

Our mission at the Children's Center is to empower children with special needs and their families to reach their full potential. In order to do that, we need to expand our Augusta facility. Why? Because on average there is a waiting list of about 100 kids annually who need our help -- help we can provide if only we had enough room to do so.

That’s why much of 2021 focused on a capital campaign to raise $5 million for a 14,000 square foot expansion and additional renovations to our existing facility.

100 kids are waiting and losing developmental potential while they do. You can help better a child's long-term quality of life by pitching in today to get us closer to the campaign finish line!

That's right, we're almost there! But we need your help, and that’s where the 100K Club comes in.

“100K” has a dual meaning. The “K” represents “Kids” – the 100 Kids typically waiting for the opportunity to enroll in Children’s Center programs. It also represents a collective financial effort: $100,000 (“100K” in short - aren't we clever?!).

We’re looking for 100 businesses or individuals to donate $1,000 by the end of March when we break ground. We have some fun ways to recognize the generous 100K contributors in the months ahead, but ultimately it’s about helping us achieve our campaign goal and seeing this project completed a year from now!

The Children’s Center, a not-for-profit early childhood intervention organization, has provided specialized programs to children, birth to age 5, with disabilities since 1966. In addition to early intervention services, we offer family support to caregivers throughout greater Kennebec, Somerset and Franklin counties.

By the time a child is six-years-old, 95% of their neurotransmitter pathways have developed. These pathways are responsible for movement, speech, human connection – in short, they determine our ability to relate to and function in the world around us, to feel and express love, to communicate joy, frustration, anger, pain; to trust and to live a life beyond initial limitations.

Children with special needs have the same window of opportunity as their typically developing peers. With the right interventions, we can help them optimize development in preparation for everything ahead.

Our mission focuses on taking advantage of this most critical time in development with the understanding that the sooner they receive specialized services, the greater progress they can make in a shorter amount of time. We offer these services using a research-driven, multidisciplinary approach in an inclusive setting. We are one of two early intervention sites in Maine to provide inclusive programming, integrating typically developing children with kids with special needs. Research indicates that this is the most successful environment for effective interventions – essentially, nothing motivates a three-year-old like another three-year-old, regardless their developmental differences. Typically developing children make up 25-30% of the census at any given time. In addition to childhood education, they get the benefit of learning empathy, tolerance and seeing difference as different and not less.
