During this course, we will discuss built environment climate adaptation technology in the form of novel construction adhesives and sealants used in light-frame wood and concrete construction to include in passive house planning for resiliency against seismic and violent-wind events. To get to mid-century carbon-neutrality, all viable means must be on the table, urgently developed and incorporated at-scale, with social equity its steady compass. U.S. climate technology, including adaptation, needs to be transferred wherever needed. Phil Georgeau, Founder/Owner, Climate, Inc. Born in 1940, Phil overcame many obstacles through sheer determination to educate himself and evolve industry. Despite being forced to work in a coal mine to finance his college education, he developed a passion for product development, leading to several successful businesses and patents, including founding and the successful sale of ChemLink to Soprema. After six years of development and testing, he founded in 2023 a small adhesives company, Climate Adhesives/Sealants, and continues to innovate, significantly contributing to construction research. Phil's accomplishments are a testament to his unwavering commitment to built environment innovation to improve lives. Lessons Learned 1. Understand the ability and urgency of deploying novel construction adhesives and sealants designed for light-frame wood and concrete substrates to increase structural resiliency against seismic and violent wind weather events, ever-increasing due to climate change. 2. Analyze construction adhesives as non-toxic and high-performing yet affordable climate adaptation technology and its potential impact on the safety of the built environment, particularly during violent natural disasters. 3. Introduce the applicability of this novel product to passive house projects and pre-fab manufacturing, and articulate the potential community welfare gains that could result from its deployment. 4. Articulate the importance of identifying potential partnerships to enhance the survivability of practitioners' future projects and to create a safer and more resilient built environment during seismic and violent-wind events.
