My story started in 1976 when I had to tell a young man's parents their son was shot after stealing a car and was brain dead. (80% of gang kids will give up violence if taught to read.) Or maybe it was 1995 when my daughter stated she was not going to learn to read. Or maybe it was the day I learned that I was dyslexic. Each event played its part.

I created Rocket Phonics for my daughter. It is a series of games where the games teach the essential skills of reading until the child is both reading and loving it. I wrote it out for my daughter's friends. After a UCLA study that showed that Rocket Phonics students gained an average of a year in 3 months I started selling it. But the children motivated me to start the Rocket Phonics Foundation. The young ones are happy and much easier to teach than after 10 years of frustration.

By the time they are stealing cars and joining gangs their frustrations have turned into rage. They know at some level they are trapped. I know that struggle. I know that pain. I retired from medicine to open a path to them that avoids the frustration and brings freedom and joy. I'm inviting you to join us.

Over the past 4 years our foundation has reached over 1,000 students 90% reach grade level within a year. The only way to accelerate our results to reach the 16,000 students reading below grade level in both counties is to train the teachers.

We are starting to train preschool teachers so that their students enter Kindergarten able to sound out words.

Next year we are being asked to tutor 500 more preschool and elementary children to read. It costs $30 to support a preschool coach. It costs $100 to coach an English Language Learner coach. It costs about $200 per child to bring him or her to grade level.

Your donations help us find and train the trainers for three new sites. Once a site is up and going the cost to maintain it drops dramatically.
