Please help us help Codey! At just 3.5 months old, sweet Codey is in a fight for his life in the ICU. He could really use your help.
He was found as a stray at just 8 weeks old. From the very beginning, he was on the smaller side and was slow to gain weight. A few days ago, his foster mom noticed his urine was very dilute. We went to the vet for a urinalysis, suspecting something as simple as a UTI. Unfortunately, the urinalysis results prompted bloodwork for a closer evaluation. The bloodwork results were not good. In short, it indicated he was in kidney failure. The question was, is this a congenital condition or was it an acute response to an unknown toxin? In the process of elimination for potential causes, we ruled out Leptospirosis and Addison's disease. An ultrasound did show slight swelling in the kidneys but kidney dysplasia was not seen. Still looking for answers, we took a fresh urine sample and sent it off to the lab for a culture. While waiting for the results, we started him on antibiotics prophylactically.
Late last night his foster reached out. Codey could not keep food , water or medications down and he was rapidly losing weight. We rushed him to the emergency vet where he was admitted for IV fluids, antibiotics and anti-nausea meds. New bloodwork shows he is not close to being out of the woods. A new IV antibiotic is being administered and he will need to stay longer in the ICU. The treatments and testing from both vets that saw Codey prior to the emergency vet have totaled $1042.47. The emergency vet estimate is between $1800 and $3,000.
