New Mexico is working to pass our own Green Amendment to protect our citizens already living in sacrifice zones from further polluting actions. Having the Green Amendment will support Clean Energy and a healthy environment for future generations. In this past year alone, our Green Amendment movement has reached the milestone of 15 states advancing amendment proposals, 3 states using existing amendments, and 3 more states reaching out because they want to get started. Does a Green Amendment really make a difference once secured? Absolutely: Pennsylvania’s amendment has helped one community successfully challenge early approval of an LNG transfer station without considering the environmental consequences; 16 youth in Montana defeated a state prohibition on consideration of the climate crisis with the help of their amendment; and New Yorkers, who for years had been ignored by the state environmental agency, used their amendment regarding hazardous air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from an ever expanding landfill. Green Amendments are transforming the right to clean water and air, a safe climate and healthy environments from a firmly held belief into an enforceable constitutional entitlement of the people.
