Advancing Research: Conrad Smiles actively supports research aimed at advancing the understanding and treatment of pediatric nonfatal drowning (PnFD). Although drowning is prevalent, the number one cause of accidental death in children 1-4, pediatric nonfatal drowning (PnFD) is estimated to be at least 7 times more prevalent than drowning death. Yet little is known about the children who survive, and ways to promote recovery and quality of life. Conrad Smiles is in partnership with UT Health San Antonio to change that, and we have made tremendous progress.

PnFD is now known as “Conrad Syndrome”. Conrad Tullis survived drowning at age 16 months, in January 2004. Conrad Smiles brought the condition to Dr. Peter Fox Director of UT Health San Antonio’s Research Imaging Center. Conrad was the first locked-in drowning survivor examined by Dr. Fox and the first participant to undergo the MRI imaging protocols studying this condition.

Conrad Syndrome is now the diagnostic term for pediatric drowning survivors who are still cognitively aware, feel emotion, and react to surroundings but are locked in a body that cannot function or develop normally.

Raising Awareness: Conrad Smiles promotes the importance of proper medical care, intensive rehabilitation therapy, and a positive mindset to recovery after a PnFD accident. Conrad Smiles also raises awareness of drowning and the importance of diligence with children around water.

Inspiring Hope: Conrad Smiles provides hope to families facing similar situations by providing information and examples of meaningful recovery that is possible with the right care and support.

Promoting Inclusion: Conrad Smiles focuses on inclusion in “everyday” life, particularly for children who are non-verbal and non-ambulatory. Conrad Smiles shares stories to illustrate the profound value of interactions in daily activities from the point of view of the Special Needs child in question, but also through the lens of the includers.
