Many of our neighbors in need are struggling to afford the cost of basic water and wastewater services. To help, we are participating in Dollar Energy Fund’s Cool Down for Warmth, a unique and exciting fundraising event to benefit families in need across Pittsburgh.
Your contribution to the Hardship Grant Program, an assistance program provided by Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) and administered by Dollar Energy Fund, will distribute financial aid to eligible households in need of assistance with their utility bills.

Since 2018, our Hardship Grant Program has helped more than 630 Pittsburgh households maintain essential water services by providing income-eligible customers with annual cash assistance to put towards their monthly water bill. We have distributed more than $165,000 through the program and awarded an average household grant of $263.

Support your neighbors today by making a tax-deductible donation to the Hardship Grant Program. The money raised will provide cash grants up to $300 per year for customers who are at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level (

Tune in to the virtual Cool Down for Warmth event on January 27 on KDKA TV to support Dollar Energy Fund and their mission and to help PWSA meet our goal to raise $2,500 for struggling customers.

We hope you can support us in this worthy cause to help our neighbors in need stay safe and warm this winter!

Imagine the stress of approaching the cold months with an apprehension that goes beyond snowy roads and is instead derived from the question no family should have to ask: will I make it through the winter? Limited-income families in our city will try to keep their houses warm so their children can sleep well at night. They will struggle to keep their pipes from freezing so they can shower for work. They will stretch their thin incomes and still not come up with the necessary funds to stay warm. But, you can help!

As part of Dollar Energy Fund’s goal to help local families maintain or restore their utilities, the non-profit organization has created a unique and exciting fundraising opportunity called Cool Down for Warmth. On January 27, 2022, KDKA-TV will host a virtual Cool Down for Warmth in a studio made entirely of ice. The goal of the televised campaign remains the same – to build awareness of the many families who will go without heat during the harsh winter months, while attempting to raise money for utility assistance grants.

Thousands of families across our region are dealing with a temporary financial crisis.

  • Home heating costs are expected to increase by as much as 30% this winter
  • Inflation is at the highest rate in 13 years
  • 20% of grant recipient households have a senior citizen
  • Half of the households supported have children under the age of 18

Your gift will have double the impact! All donations will receive a dollar-for-dollar match from our partnering utility companies and 100% of the donations and matching funds will be used to provide utility assistance grants to local families in need through Dollar Energy Fund’s Hardship Program.
