Who is HBFoL?

The Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library (HBFoL) has served Hermosa Beach for 65 years. Our 501(c)(3) public charity is led by a passionate group dedicated to fostering a love of reading and making our library resources accessible to all.

Program Summary

In celebration of its 65-year anniversary, the Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library (HBFoL) is proud to announce the launch of its Archiving Program. This initiative seeks to digitize and preserve the rich history of HBFoL's contributions to the Hermosa Beach Library and its literacy programs since 1959. With a fundraising goal of $10,000, this program will safeguard our organization's legacy and make our extensive archives accessible to the public, ensuring that the story of our community's commitment to literacy and education is told for generations to come.

The HBFoL Archiving Program aims to digitize and preserve 65 years of invaluable historical records. This initiative will protect our organization's legacy, providing insight into the evolution of literacy programs and community support in Hermosa Beach. By making these archives publicly accessible, we aim to inspire continued community involvement and support for the Hermosa Beach Library.

Activities

HBFoL has pulled together 65 years of organizational history, packed in dozens of boxes, files, and folders, all meticulously documented by the Boards and leadership that came before us. This program will support time, effort, partnerships, and archival expenses to:

Digitize Documents: Turn thousands of paper documents, including minutes, agendas, memos, conversations, photographs, and more, into a rich digital archive for preservation.
Create an Interactive Archive: Present this archive to the community in an interactive online portal that allows any Hermosa Beach or South Bay resident to explore our portal into our history.
Preserve Key Physical Documents: Establish archival storage of key photos, minutes, and other documents to preserve them for future generations.
Tell the Story of Our History, and Hermosa: Illustrate the community-driven story of our organization, and Hermosa as a whole, through this archive.

Impact

Cultural Preservation: Digitizing our archives preserves the cultural and historical fabric of Hermosa Beach and HBFoL's role within it.
Educational Resource: The digital archive will serve as a valuable resource for researchers, students, and community members interested in local history and the evolution of public literacy efforts.
Community Engagement: Sharing our history will engage and inspire current and future generations to support and participate in literacy and library programs
