1931 87th Avenue is a home on unceded Chochenyo Ohlone land in Deep East Oakland that is the center of operations for DJCC and the home to three Disabled and/or Neurodivergent QTBIPOC. It is a cozy home where it serves as a telecommuting spot for residents’ other work, including one resident who works in crisis intervention, another who works on disability advocacy, and as a base for DJCC’s community work. The building’s unique accessibility features and those of the household itself have made it a vital refuge for the people who live, work, and organize there.

The home was originally purchased by our late friend and DJCC co-founder Stacey Park Milbern, whose dream was to create both a radically accessible, affordable haven for low-income Disabled BIPOC in a rapidly-gentrifying Bay Area and space in the East Bay for community building and movement work. She fundraised to pay for the renovations needed to make the home accessible and keep herself firmly planted here, and the community came through to support her vision.

As a community and organizing hub, it has been put to many uses: storage and distribution for DJCC’s various mutual aid projects and workspace; a venue for fundraising events, holiday celebrations, and parties for and by the local disabled community; emergency housing for Sick & Disabled folks during wildfires evacuations, power outages, and other climate crises; sign-making parties and tactical meetings for direct action; and as a classroom, theatre, and kitchen for Creating Freedom Movements’ beginning of the 2020 cohort year.

The house was transferred to Stacey’s heir after her passing. DJCC and the house residents have partnered with OakCLT to negotiate the purchase. We aim to buy the house back from OakCLT after they purchase the land it's on, and form a Low-Equity Housing Cooperative (LEHC) to give the residents collective control over the space, keeping rents and overhead costs low enough that it'll continue to be accessible to Disabled folks on limited incomes. This would keep the space forever in the hands of the people who need it the most, who come from the community who has put so much loving work into it.

Our total expenses for acquisition and rehabilitation are estimated at $650,000 and we've already secured over $250,000 towards our goal!
