In this 2-hr VIRTUAL workshop participants will ground themselves collectively in the definition and meanings, and impacts of access, disability, and ableism. As well as how they are impacted as occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) and influence on client outcomes and interactions.
Participants will be led through a discussion on intersections of access, disability, ableism with the healthcare system, examining the ways we contribute to ableism as practitioners and how we can disrupt ableism both internally and amongst each other. Lastly, participants will talk about the ways that power dynamics, and unacknowledged "savior complex" can contribute negatively to a client's wellbeing.
Participants will leave with tools to begin both unlearning and learning ways for us to be grounded in access, as well as tangible moves to compassionately investigate their own OT practices.
This course has been approved for continuing education hours for occupational therapy practitioners by the Illinois & Wisconsin Occupational Therapy Associations. This course satisfies requirements for 2 PDUs for NBCOT renewal.
