In the summer of 2021, Chris started the NYC Plover Project in our apartment in Brooklyn. It was a hot day in the city and the beach felt so far away. This was pre-car, and the only way to get to Rockaway was a train, and then a bus, and then a walk on the sweltering pavement. But Chris had seen a bird who needed help and I was not about to stop him. This was, of course, the piping plover. Chris felt like someone had to look out for these small guys.
For the past three years, myself and Chris have devoted our time and resources to helping endangered shorebirds in NYC. Chris created the NYC Plover Project that summer and since then, it has dedicated 10,000 hours of work with more than 250 volunteers. This past season had our highest volunteer numbers and highest fledgling success rate since we’ve started. But our work is only just beginning.
NYCPP has proven ourself pretty scrappy and pretty resilient since launching in 2021. But just like those birds we need your help to keep going. Though I’m amazed at what Chris continues to accomplish on his own, it’s truly the community that has made our efforts thrive. Please consider our year-end giving campaign to continue this work.
