In Jamaica, a young girl's period shouldn't determine her future, but for too many students, it does. About 44% of girls in Jamaica face period poverty, missing school days every month simply because they can't access or afford menstrual products. These are brilliant girls with dreams of becoming nurses, teachers, lawyers, scientists, business owners, and community leaders whose potential gets put on hold for one week (or more) every single month.
At Mt. Alvernia High School in Montego Bay, girls wear crisp white uniforms as they pursue their dreams... and those same white uniforms become a source of anxiety instead of pride. When an unexpected period arrives at school, there's no nurse's office stocked with spare pads. There's no backup plan. Instead, there's the impossible choice between staying in class and risking embarrassment or going home and missing crucial learning time.
Menstrual cycles shouldn't impact school attendance, academic performance, or a young woman's belief in what she can achieve. But until we address period poverty, they will continue to create barriers between these students and their education.
Your Impact Changes Everything
When you donate to our "Be Her Flow Fairy" campaign, you're ensuring young women can focus on their education instead of worrying about their periods. You're giving students at Mt. Alvernia High School the confidence to walk into their chemistry classes with their heads held high.
Your $35 donation provides one student with an entire year's supply of menstrual products sourced directly from Jamaica through our partnership with Woman's Touch Feminine Products, a company founded by OB-GYN Dr. Chrisann Simpson-Harley.
The Students We're Supporting
Mt. Alvernia High School serves about 1,400 young women in Montego Bay. Many come from families where choosing between school supplies and period products is a monthly struggle. These brilliant students wear all-white uniforms, making period anxiety even more intense.
Why This Matters Right Now
September 2025 marks a fresh start. New school year. New possibilities. But without period products, these possibilities remain out of reach for too many girls.
Research shows that when girls have consistent access to menstrual products:
- School attendance increases by 58%
- Academic performance improves significantly
- Self-confidence and mental health outcomes improve
- Long-term economic opportunities expand
Your Role as a Flow Fairy
Every Flow Fairy who joins our mission understands that reproductive justice includes ensuring that a young woman's period never determines her future.
$35 = One student supported for the entire academic year
$70 = Two students never miss school due to their period
$140 = Four students can focus on their education, not their cycles
$350 = An entire classroom of girls empowered with dignity
Behind the Mission
I'm Diamond Cunningham, MPH, Research Coordinator at the Louisiana Abortion Fund and Reproductive Justice Researcher. My family's connection to Mt. Alvernia High School runs deep. My aunts and cousins walked these same halls, faced these same challenges.
This is recognizing that every girl deserves the basic dignity of managing her period without it derailing her dreams.
