Why are Clubhouses for Mental Health needed?

Mental illness is part of the human condition everywhere. The Miller Beach Clubhouse founded in 2023 came out of the efforts of concerned Indiana residents to deal with a paucity of community-based resources to help those who had experienced mental illness live successfully and satisfyingly within the community. Clubhouses around the world have been a lifeline to hundreds of people, some of whom remain very active at the Clubhouse, others of whom are working for quality employers. For so many of these members mental illness is a fact of their lives, but not necessarily its main theme.

Our experience has led us to a hope that we share with our Clubhouse colleagues everywhere: that a Clubhouse International community will be located within a reasonable geographical distance of everyone in the world who would benefit from this unique, effective, and satisfying approach to mental illness.

An exploration of the possibility of establishing a Clubhouse in Northwest Indiana, came about when a thoughtful Indiana resident visited a strong Clubhouse in another city. Upon his return home, he initiated a feasibility study that documented that people living with the challenges of mental illness throughout Northwest Indiana wanted an attractive place to come to and support their desire to be productive citizens. These individuals want friends, and good jobs, and every element of a good life.

What does Miller Beach Clubhouse do?

Employment

The Clubhouse at Miller Beach facilities an employment program that is designed to remove obstacles and provide individualized support, so that members have success on the job. Employment plays a central role in life and helps form a person’s sense of identity and self-worth. Besides financial independence work cultivates connections and a sense of purpose enhancing lives, families and business communities.

Education

Education is just as essential to our members’ lives as employment. Many members have had their education interrupted by the onset of mental illness. Our services support learning and growth that restores confidence in continued learning and the navigating of educational systems, from GED to trade schools, or undergraduate and graduate programs.

Housing

Current and safe housing should be affordable and accessible for all in the community. Clubhouse at Miller Beach assists members in locating housing throughout the community, utilizing a network of property owners who are understanding and supportive of the Clubhouse Program.
