Story

Dear Friends:

Last night was an incredible success! We'll have a recording soon to share with those who weren't able to attend in real time. I've raised our goal! Yes, it may seem audacious, but we are close-- and wouldn't it be incredible if in tenth year, we raised $10,000! Thank you to all who have supported us so far, whether financially, or in service to the effort.

Students in the Department of Theatre Arts at Ithaca College join together every year to produce a cabaret to benefit Wheels for Women-- an organization born out of professor Kathleen Mulligan's Fulbright project in Kerala, India in 2010. Wheels for Women partners with the Sakhi Shelter for survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and the sex trade in the city of Ernakulum. Funds raised by the students support job training for shelter residents, helping them to move towards financial independence and away from their abusers. The organization also contributes to the goal of building a permanent home for the shelter-- a refuge for women and their children.

This year is our 10th anniversary! To date, Wheels for Women has raised over $40,000 for the Sakhi Shelter, and trained 25 women as auto-rickshaw (taxi) drivers. This incredible success is the result of the efforts of many Theatre Arts students and alumni of Ithaca College,  as well as friends from Hope Summer Repertory Theatre in Holland, MI.

Our cabaret this year will be virtual and will feature performances and messages from current and former students, as well as a special message from Beena Sebastian, the director of the Sakhi shelter in Kerala. Please join us on Saturday, February 27th at 7PM est . Suggested donation for admission: $10.00 ($5.00 for students.)

Would you like to honor or memorialize a loved one? For a $100.00 donation you can purchase a brick for the Sakhi Shelter's permanent home. The brick can be inscribed with the name of the person you wish to honor. Please indicate inscription wording with your donation.
