My birthday is coming up on June 22nd, and I’ve decided to celebrate by supporting Psychologists of Color, Inc. — a nonprofit organization whose mission is to decrease stigma and increase access to mental health services in diverse racial and ethnic communities by increasing the number of psychologists of color.

My goal is to raise $10,000 for Psychologists of Color, Inc. to advance its P.E.P (Psychology Equity Pathways) initiative. This initiative will expand and magnify the impact of Psychologists of Color, Inc.’s current work to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of the psychologists workforce within the United States. The P.E.P. initiative centers on providing group and individualized support services, microgrants to up-and-coming psychologists of color, growing our psychology job board, and increasing awareness of opportunities for people of color within the field of psychology.

The data from the past twenty years in the United States paints a clear picture; the field of psychology is severely lacking in racial and ethnic diversity, and this problem isn’t solving itself. The lack of culturally diverse psychologists in the mental health field has critical social implications. Language and cultural barriers between clients and therapists discourage BIPOC individuals from seeking professional help.

Your birthday gift will help offer a proactive solution to the shortage of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color psychologists nationwide, promote the elevation of successful mental health careers for racial and ethnic minorities, and thereby reduce barriers to accessible and effective mental health treatment for members of marginalized communities.
