Welcome to the Students of Color in Public Policy (SCiPP) 12th Annual Race and Policy Symposium, Carrying Complexity: Navigating Policy with Urgency and Patience.

As our first community-led, artistic event we are more than excited to present a lecture demonstration on the Bomba tradition from Puerto Rico and a Batey de Bomba. As part of the diaspora, the LGBTTTIQ+ Taller Bombalele community was founded by Julia C. Cepeda and Denise Solis with a commitment to the Bomba values and practice that has been handed down and taught by the Cepeda family in the San Mateo de Cangrejo/Santurce region of Puerto Rico.

The Cepeda family has continuously preserved Bomba for more than eight generations, going back to when Bomba was outlawed in Puerto Rico. Julia and Denise will discuss how Bomba resists the processes of colonization, neoliberal capitalism, and white supremacy through artistic resilience.
