Water for South Sudan - 2022

The sixth graders at the Holten Richmond Middle School have finished reading the inspiring story A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park.  Our class discussions have focused on how Salva, the main character, demonstrates hope and perseverance to overcome unthinkable obstacles in his life.

Salva's Story

In 1985, as an 11 year old boy living in southern Sudan, Salva was forced to flee from his school and village due to the Sudanese civil war. Salva traveled without his family through harsh conditions. He crossed the Akobo Desert, the Nile and Gilo River, to find safety in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya. He spent 10 years living in different refugee camps before being chosen to move to America. Salva moved to Rochester, New York. Several years later, Salva received news that his father was still alive in a hospital in Southern Sudan, sickened by dirty water. Salva returned to Southern Sudan to visit his father and left inspired to bring clean drinking water to his home country.

The money will be donated to Salva's foundation: Water for South Sudan- Iron Giraffe Challenge.
