The United States Constitution, while laying the foundation for a new democracy, also included provisions that protected and prolonged slavery. This discussion will explore three key compromises that secured the institution of slavery in the nation’s founding document:  
The Three-Fifths Compromise,
The Slave Trade Compromise, and The Fugitive Slave Clause.
