What’s happening:

November 3rd marked three years since the start of the war on Tigray. The Irob community, like the rest of Tigray, endured a genocidal war killing thousands of people and displacing nearly two million.

While active hostilities have halted, unknown to most of the world, the indigenous Irob minority of Tigray continues to live under an ongoing, silent siege. As a result of this siege, the Irob people are facing severely diminished food supplies and limited supplies of essential medicine.

They are currently living under dire famine conditions with little to no aid due to the ongoing siege placed on the Tigray region.

Additionally, as an ethnic minority with an estimated population of less than 70,000 people, the Irob people are facing a dire humanitarian and existential crisis. Currently, over 50% of Irob is under occupation by invading Eritrean forces, and the rest are displaced from their homes.

Who the Irob people are:

The Irob are an indigenous ethnic minority group who live in a predominantly highland, mountainous area by the same name in northeastern Tigray, Ethiopia bordering Eritrea. The Irob people are known for their democratic culture, hospitality, and generosity.

Until a few decades ago, Irob land was a source of the best quality honey, livestock, and dairy products. Natural and manmade disasters including drought, the Ethio-Eritrean border war (1998-2000), and the ongoing genocidal war on Tigray, have created a humanitarian and existential crisis.

Who we are:

Irob Development Association (IDA) is a nonprofit with headquarters in Tigray and a branch with 501(c)(3) status in the US with a track record of over 20 years supporting the Irob community’s struggle for survival.

The mission of IDA is to contribute to the sustainable development of Irob society through effective and efficient mobilization of resources from within and outside the community, developing and implementing impactful programs and projects to create sustainable livelihoods and preserve the main socio-cultural assets that define the Irob identity.
