A severe case of pneumonia landed Cecilia in the emergency room in May 2021. Doctors told her that the illness had damaged her kidneys and heart, and she would need to begin dialysis treatments immediately.

At 5:40 AM on the day after Mother’s Day, Cecilia had her first dialysis appointment. The pandemic affected the times available for dialysis as well as finding consistent transportation to and from appointments. Even when she would schedule taxi pickups, they wouldn’t come, leaving Cecilia stranded and unable to receive critical care. The situation was terrifying.

"You have dialysis or you die - it's not an option."

Due to the frequency of her treatment schedule, neither Cecilia’s husband nor son were able to take time off of work to drive her. They desperately searched for a way to ensure Cecilia had a safe and reliable way to get to and from her appointments. They were elated and relieved when they learned about Foothills Caring Corps. Hearing that there were Volunteers who provide transportation to and from medical appointments for Neighbors gave them hope and the help they needed.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11 AM, Cecilia spends three-and-a-half hours at dialysis treatment. Now, Cecilia is focused on healing, instead of worrying about making it to and from her appointments.

"Without Foothills Caring Corps Volunteer drivers, getting to dialysis and home again would be nearly impossible. I don't know what I would do without your help."
