Familiar Hearts Animal Society (FHAS) is a small but growing animal rescue established in 2021 by Aminda Edgar, a longtime Mount Airy resident. FHAS serves primarily the Mount Airy, Germantown and Chestnut Hill neighborhoods of Philadelphia. FHAS aims to end the abandonment of our animal friends by providing a refuge for those waiting for homes and empowering humans to provide good homes for them.

How will we do this? Here’s our plan!

As a newly established rescue, we do not yet have a facility for housing animals in need of a home. This means that over the next several years, we will rely on individuals in our community to foster the dogs and cats we take in. In the meantime, we are raising money to open a sanctuary for our animals in need. This will allow us to take in more animals and will provide a place for animals to stay safe and heal while we find their forever home.

In addition, we are working on ways to address the root causes of pet abandonment. For example, because the expense of pet ownership can lead individuals to get rid of their pets, we will be opening a thrift store providing financially stressed pet owners with low-cost pet supplies as well as connections to sliding scale vet care and animal training. We have also begun an educational school-based program called Paws for a Cause. This wonderful program aims to teach young people how to be good pet owners through better understanding of the needs and behavior of animals. These two initiatives will lead to fewer abandoned animals, improving the health of our neighborhoods, where stray animals can be a nuisance and a danger, and reducing the suffering experienced by abandoned animals.

Our ultimate goal is to become a sanctuary for both animals and people in this uncertain and often unkind world.
