Reviving Ancestral Practices: Saving seeds and selecting the best-adapted plants are both age-old practices that remain relevant today. They create local food systems that yield better tasting and more nutritious produce, reduce reliance on fertilizers and plastics, and enhance resilience against unpredictable weather. And most significant – it increases the supply of locally adapted seeds for gardeners everywhere!

What Impact Your Donation Makes:

Farming budgets are tight. Our grants, ranging from $600 to $2,500, provide seed, technical support, and a financial safety net that enables farmers to take a risk on a crop adaptation project. For example:

The Promiscuous Tomato Project: Gardeners love tomatoes, but centuries of inbreeding have created a vegetable that is highly susceptible to disease and weather extremes. Joseph Lofthouse’s Beautifully Promiscuous and Totally Tasty Tomato Project is re-invigorating this crop with wild genetics, creating an outcrossing or “promiscuous” line of seeds that will serve as a foundation for farmers and gardeners everywhere to select tomatoes that thrive in their local conditions.
The Giving Gardens Project: Ryan and Sarah of Seeds of Compassion are partnering with Going to Seed to develop a community-focused garden. They are cultivating a Landrace Maxima Squash and sharing nutritious food and climate-adapted seeds with those in need.
Re-adapting eggplant: West India is one of the regions where eggplants were domesticated thousands of years ago. However, the effects of the Green Revolution have wiped out the older pest-resistant heirloom varieties in favor of high-yielding, pesticide-dependent hybrids. Biman Roy and Karan, with other families in West Bengal, India, will be using this grant to develop a diverse, pest-resistant eggplant landrace that can become a local staple crop.
The Nye Ranch Farm in windy and foggy coastal Northern California is getting a grant for its second year of adapting sweet corn to its cold summer. These seeds will be especially valuable for any gardener who thinks their summer is too cold or short for sweet corn.
Iriel Edwards is developing resilient mustard green varieties in Boyce, Louisiana. It is challenging growing organic mustard greens in the South, where unpredictable weather has increased pest pressure. Iriel is collaborating with other community partners to increase seed sovereignty and ecological resilience while reconnecting cultural ties to food in Louisiana.
