The William “Spiff” Marceau Memorial Scholarship is established in loving memory of William “Spiff” Marceau, who was also known as Samone Odessa Little Plume. To those who knew and loved him, he was simply “Spiff.” His Blackfeet name, Matoom Saipiyi (“First Charger”), was given to him by our late uncle, Joe Whitegrass, and reflected the strength, spirit, and leadership he carried throughout his life.

Spiff was a proud member of the Blackfeet Nation whose roots ran deep among the Little Plume, Whitegrass, Lazy Boy, Coat, and Marceau families. He was a cherished son, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. As the first grandson of Thomas “Redman” Little Plume and Betty Little Plume, and the first nephew in our family, he held a special place in the hearts of many.

Spiff was known for his kindness, generosity, and welcoming nature. He had a gift for making people feel comfortable and valued. Whether meeting someone for the first time or reconnecting with an old friend, Spiff left a lasting impression through his warm smile, genuine compassion, and ability to connect with others. He was fun to be around, eager to learn, and never hesitant to strike up a conversation or lend a helping hand.

A proud supporter and member of the LGBTQ+ community, Spiff embraced and celebrated people for who they were. He encouraged others to be themselves and created spaces where people felt accepted, respected, and loved.

Spiff was deeply committed to his Blackfeet culture, language, and ceremonial way of life. He played an important role in ceremonies, cultural activities, and efforts to learn and preserve the Blackfeet language. He understood the importance of carrying forward the teachings of our ancestors and sharing that knowledge with future generations.

In 2018, Spiff participated in the Semester in the Arctic exchange program at Iḷisaġvik College, where he continued his educational journey as a student, residential aide, and intern. During his time there, he touched many lives and formed lasting relationships through his kindness, compassion, and welcoming spirit.

Following Spiff’s unexpected passing in 2022, his chosen family, colleagues, friends, and community members at Iḷisaġvik College came together to honor his memory. Their collective contribution of $1,400 provided the initial funding to establish this scholarship in recognition of the impact Spiff had on those around him. In addition, Spiff’s family has committed to contributing annually to help sustain the scholarship and support future generations of students.

At Blackfeet Community College, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to pursue higher education in an environment where they feel supported, respected, and empowered to succeed. This scholarship provides annual financial assistance to LGBTQ+/Two-Spirit students enrolled at Blackfeet Community College, helping reduce barriers to education and supporting their academic journey. For many students, financial hardship can impact access to higher education, making scholarships like this an important source of opportunity, encouragement, and belonging.

This scholarship honors Spiff’s legacy by supporting students who demonstrate kindness, community involvement, cultural pride, and a commitment to helping others. It is intended to encourage individuals who embody the values that Spiff lived every day—generosity, respect, acceptance, lifelong learning, and service to community.

Through this scholarship, Spiff’s memory and spirit will continue to inspire future generations, reminding us all of the importance of living with an open heart, embracing our culture, and treating others with compassion and dignity.

“Matoom Saipiyi – First Charger” will forever be remembered for the love he shared, the lives he touched, and the legacy he leaves behind among his family, friends, community, and the Blackfeet people.
