Foil The Milfoil: The Moody Pond Challenge ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Saturday from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM EDT
'Foil the Milfoil: The Moody Pond Challenge', is a virtual fundraiser beginning July 11th, and ending with an Ice Cream Social-distancing Celebration on Moody Pond, August 8th. We are hoping that you will embrace the campaign enthusiastically and participate by choosing an activity, walking, running, biking, bagging peaks, reading, even sewing masks, anything you can think of, and encourage others to join you as a team or as a supporter. You have the chance to be creative, to be inspired and to inspire others. Moody Pond is challenging you, and we’re confident you are up to the ‘Challenge’. Celebrate the conclusion of the event on the pond. The Friends of Moody Pond will be serving ice cream, listening to local bands, and holding a silent auction, with items donated by local businesses. Everyone is welcome, and it's FREE for 'Challenge' participants; all others, $2.00 suggested donation.
In August 2018, Eurasian watermilfoil was detected in Moody Pond. This Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) spreads easily and grows at an alarming rate. It can form thick, floating mats of vegetation, clogging the water and hindering recreation. It would be a terrible shame to allow the pond to go the way of so many others, clogged with Eurasian watermilfoil all summer, stinking with rotting weeds as Autumn approaches, the native plants replaced by invasives, and the varieties and health of the fish changing. Spread prevention relies on early detection of new AIS, rapid response, and public education.
With this in mind, the Friends of Moody Pond (FMP) was quickly organized. In the late summer of 2019, the Friends of Moody Pond, now a non-profit, had its first organizational meeting, resolving to move forward and organize the effort to eradicate Eurasian watermilfoil from the pond and preserve its beauty and health. Since the Moody Pond neighborhood is enjoyed and loved by a sizable share of individuals and families from the wider community, we are decidedly not a homeowner’s association, but a community nonprofit. We’ve listened to consultants on how to best manage the watermilfoil infestation, and have tentatively decided on a combination of weed suppressant mats and hand harvesting by divers. The task will not be an easy one and it will be an expensive one. Our estimate is that we will require approximately $15,000 each year for at least three years. The health of this treasure is well worth preserving, and the Friends of Moody Pond are determined to preserve it.
