The G.W.C Brown Legacy Education Fund has been positively impacting our community since 2011. With our scholarship program, the Fund's commitment continues to aid those within the Greater Hampton Roads region to transform young men's DREAMS into REALITY. We do this with the impactful authenticity that uniquely comes when sponsorship is gained from role models, mentors, and professionals in various career fields. The G.W.C Brown Legacy Education Fund's targeted vehicles – in the form of various customized scholarship awards – are granted each year to the proven young area scholars of challenged means. We also conduct a mentoring and professional development program, called Alpha Scholars Academy, as part of Alpha Phi Alpha's National Program "Go to High School, Go to College." Since 1932, this grassroots program has provided the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity members the opportunity to serve the community by "putting our young men on the right track and keeping them there." The program is a combination of classroom instruction from a vetted national curriculum and mentoring activities.
COVID-19 has impacted the way all organizations operate. This year, we had to cancel our Black and Gold Scholarship Ball: our signature fundraising event. Instead of having 300+ of our closest friends and supporters gathered together to celebrate the successes of our scholars, distinguished brothers, and community servants, we staying safe, and converting all programming to digital platforms.
In addition to the impact on our programs, this "new normal" has had significant impact on our plans for the Alpha Leadership & Education Center (ALEC). We had planned to host programs for the community in this building. Now, we are delayed, however, we are not denied. During this time, we are continuing to improve this grand building from the 1920s so we will be able to offer cutting edge technology.
