In Loving Memory of Gary Hackler: Champion of Honor and Heroes
Gary Hackler was more than a dedicated Sales Manager and General Manager at WCIA Channel 3 News in Champaign, IL—he was a visionary force who believed deeply in honoring those who served our nation. Working hand-in-hand with Rich Darby, Founder of Operation Honor Guard, Gary orchestrated major corporate partnerships that transformed WCIA's annual Operation Honor Guard Day of Giving into a powerhouse event. Over the years, this initiative has raised nearly $4 million, equipping thousands of honor guard members with the dignity and resources they deserve to pay tribute to fallen heroes.
After his days at WCIA he continued to work for this cause over the airwaves of radio at WITY and later at D102/Krock in Danville.
Gary's passion wasn't just about numbers; it was about broadcasting a message of respect, gratitude, and unwavering support for our veterans. He saw the honor guard not as a duty, but as a sacred legacy worth fighting for—and he rallied communities, corporations, and hearts to make it happen.
