Gorda is a sweet, silly, well-mannered 7 yr. old pittie who’s been through hell & back! But we’re hoping we can raise enough money to make sure she makes a full recovery from what should have been a very common spay surgery.

Our precious Gorda arrived at the West LA Shelter in June 2023. Because this cuddle bug was being overlooked for way too long, she was chosen to attend a mobile pet adoption.

In preparation of the event, she was sent on Jan. 4 to an outside vet practice who is contracted with LA City to perform low-cost spay & neuter surgeries for shelter animals.

The following morning, Gorda was found in her crate lethargic and unable to walk. And over the next few hours, she began to crash.

With permission, volunteers rushed her to ASEC LA, where she was diagnosed with three large blood clots on the sites where the spay happened -- her ovaries & uterus. (The diagnosis fee was approx. $3K.)

She had 1.6 liters of blood in her belly, so the surgeon removed tissue on all the three sites and gave her a much-needed blood transfusion. Following surgery, she had ongoing issues with her gastro system & had a nasal tube put in so she didn't aspirate, which is potentially lethal. This added another approx. $2800. (Costs also added up for continued hospital stay, monitoring and medications.)

Additionally, Gorda can’t move her right hind leg and has extreme weakness in her left; so she can’t stand if unsupported.

Gorda was released on Jan. 8, but she began to vomit undigested food. Sadly, she was readmitted once again the next day and was subsequently diagnosed with an ulcer and anemia.

Gorda was discharged from her second hospital stay on Jan. 12., and she is now recuperating at a volunteer’s home while we look for a long-term foster & rescue. No one wants to see Gorda return to the shelter after all she’s been through!!

Thankfully, Gorda’s life was saved. But all of her vet care has been put on credit cards of three volunteers who brought her to the hospital. Her expenses are up to $12K, and she will need more care to address her mobility issues. (She had none before this spay surgery, and her vets think she may need to see a neurologist.)

To date, we have raised approximately $4000, and we would be so grateful for any donations – no amount is too small.

Our volunteers are constantly giving their time & money, but Gorda’s care has exceeded what they can afford. (All donations will be shared amongst the three volunteers!)
