Story

Will you join the Hampshire Regional YMCA Swimathon?

Challenge yourself, raise funds and strengthen our community!

The swimathon will raise critical funds to support the YMCA's "Strengthening Our Structure for a Brighter Future Emergency Repair Project." This project will complete emergency repairs to an exterior wall, stabilizing and repairing a structural beam, replacing and repairing the roof, and rebuilding the exterior wall. The repairs from this project will secure the longtime viability of our building, mitigate further issues in this area and maintain the availability of our swimming pools for the community. Our pools welcome 7,500 visitors annually, from first time swimmers in Water Discovery lessons through active older adults in our arthritis friendly shallow water classes. The pools at the Hampshire Regional YMCA provide community support through educational and wellness programming.

What happened and why we need your support.

In September of 2020 a section of the exterior brick fa├žade fell off of the building onto a lower rooftop. The section is located on the side wall of our large pool. A contractor was hired to remove the brick and repair the damaged wall. But that was when everything changed!

The walls came tumbling down...

Once the wall was removed heavy rust was present on the structural beam between the large and small pool. The area has been inspected by a structural engineer and architect and after their review it has been determined major repairs are needed to repair and mitigate further issues. The project is estimated to cost between $250,000 to $300,000. The wall has been stabilized, but we need your help!

You can make a difference! You can maintain the YMCA pools through your participation and fundraising. With your participation the YMCA pools can remain available to the community for exercise, aqua aerobics, recreation and swim lessons. . Register your team today and begin raising funds!

Event Details

All participants must pre-register to participate in the YMCA's Swimathon. To provide a safe environment for our staff and swimmers the event will have a limited capacity and will not be able to welcome spectators to maintain COVID-19 safety measures and protocols. The event will be hosted on Saturday, May 8th starting at 12:00 PM and finishing at 7:00 PM. Swimmers that register to participate in the event will be assigned a 30 minute swim time by event staff. Event details and swim assignments will be emailed to participants the week of the event.

Challenge yourself- Lets collectively swim across the English Channel!

As a community we can swim across the English Channel! Each participant will have their laps counted toward our community total. Our goal is to swim the English Channel- together! Event volunteers will be stationed at the deep end of the pool to count laps toward our collective goal. Volunteers will wear face coverings and be distant from the pool as they count laps for each swimmer.

A prize will be awarded to the male and female swimmer who complete the most laps in their allotted 30 minute swim block.

Raising funds to strengthen our community

After registering each participant will receive a confirmation email. The email will have a link to join the event as a fundraiser. As a fundraiser you can create your own fundraising page where you can set a fundraising goal. To encourage and reward each participant who raises funds we will have incentives along the way!
