As many of you who know me and our family, we’ve enjoyed every aspect of the YMCA for years. From fitness classes, youth sports, child watch, weight room. Yet, I’ve always viewed the pool as a kid thing. Joe started with the Daddy and Joe swimming lessons, then Gym and Swim, family swim in the small pool. You’ve got the idea.
It wasn’t until 2019, when watching Joe work through his level 4 swim lessons, when I really got envious of all these people who know how to swim. That fall, I signed up Dennis and I for adult swim lessons. It opened up a whole new world for me. As an athlete, I have a whole new skill and a way to move that I never had before. Before the pandemic I worked on my distance, form, and fear of the water (which is still my biggest hurdle).
I’ve been in the pool a couple times a week since they opened it back up in July. I’m so grateful for the space, the YMCA, and the sport of swimming. To learn to swim as an adult takes bravery. First to admit you can’t do it and then to take it on. The YMCA creates an accessible and safe place for us to learn and grow. This, among other reasons, is why I’m so pound to be apart of it.
