Every year, thousands of horses find themselves standing in the dust of low-end auction pipes, caught in a high-stakes race against time. For many of these animals—ranging from retired racehorses and outgrown ponies to "grade" horses with years of loyal service—the highest bidder is often a kill buyer: a middleman who purchases horses in bulk to ship them across borders for slaughter. Rescuing a horse from this "kill pen" cycle is a mission of urgent intervention. It’s about spotting the potential beneath the matted manes and the fear in their eyes, outbidding those who see them only as a price per pound, and providing the quarantine, medical care, and gentle retraining they need to transition from a "discard" to a beloved companion once again.

The Safety Net: Many horses at auction are perfectly healthy and rideable but ended up there due to a previous owner's financial hardship or lack of knowledge.

Horses have an ongoing need to be saved from going to auctions that kill buyers frequent. More and more auctions have loose horse pens that have horses that will be bought by kill buyers and shipped off to slaughter. In our area, there are a couple of auctions that have these loose horse pens that run between 100-150 horses. The majority of these horses end up in the hands of the kill buyers and are shipped to suffer in the kill pen- brokerage lots, or shipped directly to slaughter. The age range of these horses are a weanling to a senior horse.
