Two years ago, with the support of friends and family, we launched a scholarship in my late father's name: Dr. Sakher Hallak.

Dr. Sakher Hallak was a beloved physician, son, brother, husband, and father of two when he gave his life for his country.
Dr. Hallak was one of the most well-known and respected physicians in Syria. He still devoted a large portion of his time to charity and education. Specializing in eating and nutritional disorders, he was invited to attend the AED (Academy for Eating Disorders) conference in Florida in 2011, where he shared some of his successful experiences treating thousands of clients. Soon after returning home, he was kidnapped, tortured and killed by the Al-Assad regime, becoming the first of the tens of thousands of civilians who lost their lives in Aleppo.

After 11 years of war in Syria, the COVID-19 pandemic, and an economic crisis, education for Syrian youth has been severely disrupted, leaving more than 2.4 million out of school. Dr. Hallak’s sacrifice, coupled with the pressing need for educators and skilled labor in Syria, has inspired us to create this collegiate scholarship.

Scholarship summary and goals:

· Focus on STEM degrees from Syrian and Turkish universities
· Be continued indefinitely and support recipients until graduation
· Provide access to academic resources and support
· Provide access to advisory resources and mentorship
· Supported 25 students for both 2020/2021 & 2021/2022 academic years
· More than half of which graduated this past year
· To support a minimum of ten students for the upcoming academic year 2022/2023
· Provide monetary support to help cover tuition and expenses
· Covering up to 100% of tuition (university & major dependent)
· $50 per student per month. 10 months a year. For a total of $5000
· An additional $1000 is to be raised to cover deficit from last year

Finances & Transparency:

All donations are routed to Midad, an education-focused nonprofit in Syria and Turkey. All funds (from this campaign and direct donations) will be sent in one lump sum from the U.S. via Mercy Without Limits. A nonprofit 501C(3) organization registered in the United States under Tax ID: 45-5297608.

If we exceed our fundraising goal, additional funds will be used to accept additional students.

Over the past couple of years, our fundraising efforts helped at least 25 students attend school. Potentially changing their lives for the better. With your support, we can continue this for years to come.

Making donations directly to MWL has proven difficult to track and reroute over the last two years. MWL & Midad have requested me to send all fundraising in one lump sum this year to minimize donation tracking and overall workload. They work with many scholarship funds and education programs.
