Ten years ago, Headwaters started with $600 and a belief that students should be challenged to ask their own questions in a way that would help them understand the process of science, rather than handed a set of facts to memorize. Since 2014, we have helped kids understand not only how to conduct research, answering questions they have about the world around them, but also how to approach questions through problem solving and critical thinking lenses.

Our mission is to foster curiosity through science and over the past 10 years, thousands of students have discovered an interest in the natural world, a passion for research, a newfound creativity in STEM, and a newfound confidence in science. From afterschool programs for elementary school kids to middle school overnight programs to remote high school research experiences, there's been something for students of all ages and we've seen topics covering biology, chemistry, ecology, evolution, and so much more. Students use scientific tools they didn't know existed, visit field sites and natural areas they've never been to, and analyze data with statistics they didn't think was possible.
