Greg, our resident alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii), holds a special place at Turtle Island Center in Austria. Rescued from a BBQ in Mississippi in 2009, Greg has since become a star at our center. Weighing over 240 lbs (110 kg), he is a true living dinosaur, known for his enormous size and surprisingly youthful appearance. Unlike many of his kind, who smooth out as they grow, Greg retains the rugged, spiky look of a much younger turtle.

However, with great size comes great responsibility. Greg's enclosure at the home of Reiner Praschag, our late founder, requires urgent repairs. We recently discovered a slow leak that, while not directly affecting Greg, is causing significant damage to the surrounding structure.

Repairing his tank is no small task. Given Greg's size and formidable bite – which rivals the bite force of some of the most powerful predators in the animal kingdom – moving him safely is a major challenge.
