Huntington's Disease (HD) is a devastating, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder that results in a loss of cognitive, behavioral and physical control. Presently, there is no treatment or cure. HD slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, think, talk and reason. Symptoms usually appear in an individual between 30 and 50 years of age and progress over a 10 to 25 year period. More than 30,000 people in the United States are currently diagnosed with HD and 200,000 are at-risk. Each of their siblings and children has a 50 percent risk of developing the disease. Although medications can relieve some symptoms in certain individuals, research has yet to find a means of conquering or even slowing the deadly progression of HD.

Aperion Care Summerfield in Cloverdale, Indiana is the only dedicated HD full-time care facility in the United States. Aperion Caregivers provide a level of personal caring that goes well beyond providing post-hospital rehabilitation and long-term skilled nursing care. When we were moving our family member into the Summerfield facility this summer, we asked caregivers if there was anything they needed to better support their HD residents. They said that a wheelchair-capable bus to take residents on their 'dream outings' would be a fantastic add to their current resources. This fun-raising campaign is to enable these wonderful caregivers to continue to provide the best care possible to the residents of Summerfield - and to bring more daily joy into HD resident lives.
