Many years ago, I was looking for ways to make a difference in the world. Through online searches, I came across a program called Higher Achievement that provided academic support and mentoring to middle school students in Washington, DC. As a first-generation college graduate myself, I was attracted to the program's educational focus. What started as a volunteer commitment to tutor middle school students once weekly turned into so much more.
The scholars I mentored received top-tier, year-round academic enrichment and social-emotional support through participation in Higher Achievement's program.
- They spent their summers touring local universities and learning about what they might expect as a student in college.
- They strengthened their voices by writing personal poetry about their love for their community, their favorite sneakers, and their vision for the future.
- They went on field trips to many of DC's most notable engineering, architecture, and law firms and asked top professionals how they might one day secure a job there.
Witnessing the brilliance and confidence of Higher Achievement scholars was always so inspiring! I enjoyed the volunteer experience so much that I eventually applied for a staff position and worked at the organization for another three years, helping to secure funding for the mission.
Across my 15 years of experience working in the nonprofit sector, Higher Achievement's educational model focused on rigor, relationships, and results has always stood out as one of the best. I'm delighted to join in the campaign to celebrate Higher Achievement's 50 years of impact and ensure that the program continues its operations for 50 more years into the future.
Please join me in supporting the future generation of brilliant scholar leaders in the Washington, DC area. Your donation today positively impacts generations for tomorrow!
Deepest gratitude,
Emerald
