We have a few clients who sleep outside on their own property because their homes are uninhabitable.

Home takes on many forms

BUT

it's also the place we feel most comfortable, loved, and protected — where we most feel at home.

The journey home for a person experiencing homelessness includes too many barriers.

Your contributions help us get them home - safely, sustainably, & compassionately, one step at a time.

FACTS:

Today, as you read this, please take a moment to think of the humans experiencing homelessness in Austin.

- There are no public spaces for the homeless to legally live in Austin.

- The camping ban is in full effect in Austin; being enforced by APD and TxDoT.

- Police are still ticketing people.

- The City of Austin & TXDoT are still disposing of tents & personal belongings regularly.

- There are less than 250 open beds each night available for shelter (and those are male-only).

- ZERO open beds available on any given night for women (the Salvation Army's women's night shelter is closed).

- The single sanctioned campsite is closed for camping.

- TWO City owned hotels are open and operating - housing 180ish total people per night.

- You cannot check-in or be referred to a city owned homeless hotel - a city task force selects your camp for shelter.

- TWO City hotels remain closed, not operating as shelters, & house zero people nightly.

Austin's homeless population appears to have diminished since Prop B passed.

- It is because they are in hiding.

- The vast majority have not been housed.

The good news is that the waiting lists for Permanent Supportive or Rapid Re-Housing (don't let the name fool you) for the homeless are moving and people are being housed, one at a time, based on capacity, and, landlords who will allow their storied pasts.

Because of this reality, the homeless have tucked themselves away from the people in Austin out of fear.

Our happy little team gets them to their next steps sustainably & compassionately - despite these incredible barriers.

Old people live in nursing homes, and baseball players try to reach home plate. Animal shelters find homes for pets. Most people feel safe and happy at home, even if it's not perfect. It’s easy to find somewhere to live, but it’s tough to make a real home.
