On August 16, 2025, our beloved Marvouneen Shannon, affectionately known as “Shug,” departed this life peacefully in her home surrounded by family. Just as she lived—with grace, intention, and on her own terms—she left this world leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and service.

Born on April 18, 1930, in Macon, Mississippi, to Wyatt Bentley and Maggie Lee Starks Sansing, Marvouneen embraced life with authenticity, joy, and a spirit unapologetically her own.

A proud graduate of McKendree College, she earned double Bachelor’s Degrees in Social Work and Education. She went on to dedicate over 20 years as an educator in East St. Louis School District 189, where she shaped young minds and earned numerous awards for her excellence in teaching.

Marvouneen’s generosity extended far beyond the classroom. She was a mentor to countless young people, a guide to emerging educators, and a passionate community advocate. Her philanthropic heart supported organizations such as Easter Seals and March of Dimes, and in recent years, she developed a profound commitment to advancing awareness and supporting research for Sickle Cell Anemia.

To honor her remarkable life and carry forward her spirit of giving, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the MTS Sickle Cell Foundation. Your contribution will help continue Marvouneen’s legacy of compassion, service, and hope for a cure.
