Hope’s Promise was founded in 2012 in Chester, New Jersey, as a way to pay forward the healing power of horses. Inspired by her own journey, founder Maureen Coultas created the organization after battling the debilitating effects of PTSD caused by childhood trauma and abuse. It was through her first horse, Chief, that a door was opened to a deeper, more profound healing Maureen never imagined possible. Determined to share that transformative connection, she began teaching therapeutic riding lessons and bringing her miniature therapy horses to facilities across Northern and Central New Jersey — offering others the chance to experience the extraordinary emotional, physical, and psychological benefits of interacting with horses.

Since its founding, Hope’s Promise has touched over 45,000 lives through its programs and therapy visits.

Driven by a deep commitment to serve, Hope’s Promise has remained entirely volunteer-run since 2012. Maureen and Tom Coultas have generously donated their time, resources, and property to sustain and grow the organization. And approximately 20 dedicated volunteers assist each week with caring for our horses and supporting our programs and lessons. However, as awareness and demand for our services continue to increase, we’ve reached a pivotal moment. The need for our programs far exceeds what one person can provide — and we’ve had to turn away students and decline visits to facilities due to limited capacity.

It’s time to expand. We are determined to grow, to reach more people in need, and to train others who can help us carry out this vital work. By hiring staff and building a dedicated team, we can meet the rising demand for therapeutic riding lessons, equine-assisted visits, and other transformative programs, ensuring no one is turned away from the healing promise of hope.
