In the small, tight-knit community of Whitehall, Montana, there lies a haven for survivors of traumatic brain injuries- a place we have proudly called home for decades. Our non-profit assisted living facility has been a beacon of compassion, care, and community for individuals in need of support. However, in recent times, we find ourselves facing unprecedented challenges that threaten the very foundation of our beloved home.

Liberty Place Inc. is a grassroots non-profit organization established in 1996 in Montana to help meet the needs of adults needing not just long-term care, but assistance to live their best lives after becoming severely disabled following brain injury. Four women working together in the 1990's saw that the people whom they had been serving in a Skilled Care Facility needed supports in order to live more independently in the community, rather than isolated and institutionalized. Liberty Place operates two facilities with targeted services based on the individual's level and type of need. Liberty Place also operates a small public transportation program which assists not only our residents, but local seniors and others with disabilities to access much needed basic community access, vocational, recreational, and medical services for which often requires travel of 25-250 miles to receive.

The mission and design of Liberty Place programs is to assist individuals to reach their highest level of independence. Specialized and unique programs are imperative for those living with severe disability after and Acquired Brain Injury and Liberty Place serves adults from all over. This level of care is difficult to find in the northwest region of the United States, some individuals find the need for our services to be of life long duration and others regain skills needed for return to full community living with supports.

Our Struggle: Like many non-profit organizations, we face financial hurdles in maintaining the day-to-day operations that are crucial to the wellbeing of our residents. A combination of rising operational costs, unforeseen emergencies, and difficulty in receiving reimbursements from Medicaid due to this year’s redetermination process, has placed our assisted living in a precarious position. Our dedicated team of caregivers are working tirelessly to provide quality care to our residents, but the financial strain is making it increasingly difficult to maintain the level support they deserve.

Our commitment to maintaining a high standard of care remains unwavering, but we now turn to our community for support.
