Founded in 1994, IDEA is a global advocacy network led by individuals who have personally experienced Hansen’s disease. With active local organizations carrying the IDEA name in 19 countries and a worldwide network, the organization champions the rights, voices, and leadership of those often relegated to the shadows.

IDEA International (the global network of organizations of people with lived experience of Hansen’s Disease and any of the Neglected Tropical Diseases) holds Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and has been instrumental in raising awareness, pushing for culturally sensitive public health strategies, and advocating for respectful language in media and health communication.
