This LGBTQ History Month, help Invisible Histories digitally preserve two important collections.

We are raising $7,000 to digitize DVDs, VHS tapes, audio cassettes, and reel-to-reel recordings of two Southern Black Lesbian leaders, Ruby Sales and Angela Denise Davis. The content of the recordings varies from family and chosen family moments to interviews with Harlem Renaissance artists to conversations with Black LGBTQ activists. These recordings are incredibly rare, at-risk, and critically important particularly in this anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion moment that we are in.

But you can make sure that this incredible knowledge isn't lost forever! These funds will allow us to have the recordings repaired in anyway they need, digitized professionally, identified for specific content, and made available for research, exhibits, and other educational endeavors.

RUBY SALES

Ruby Sales was born in 1948 in Jemison, Alabama and attended Carver High School in Birmingham. She has degrees from Tuskegee Institute, Manhattanville College, Episcopal Divinity School, and Princeton University. Sales is the founder of Spirit House Project, a nonprofit that uses the arts, research, education, action, and spirituality to bring diverse peoples together to work for racial, economic, and social justice, as well as for spiritual maturity. She has been recognized by PBS and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture for her work in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), involvement in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches, and connection to the "Bloody Lowndes" incident in 1965.

ANGELA DENISE DAVIS

Angela Denise Davis is from East Point, Georgia. She has degrees from Clark Atlanta University, Vanderbilt University Divinity School, and Georgia State University. Davis is a the Creative Director of ZAMI NOBLA (National Organization of Black Lesbians on Aging) where she is the creator, host, and producer of the ZAMI NOBLA Podcast. She also directs ZAMI NOBLA's community music program, UKE-In. Davis is a minister and musician. She is a level 3 certified ukulele teacher in the James Hill Ukulele Initiative teacher certification program.
