On April 14, 2019, my brother-in-law, Marine Raider SSgt. Joshua Braica, was tragically killed in active duty during a training accident at Camp Pendleton while honorably serving our country. That day, my wife and her siblings lost their eldest brother, her parents lost their son, his wife lost a husband, his son lost a father, and the list of loss goes on. Since this tragedy unfolded, there has been one constant source of help: the Marine Raider Foundation. When the world seemed to move on, they never did.
The term "never leave a man behind" has become synonymous with the military—but what about the family they leave behind? The Marine Raider Foundation does not need to exist; no government agency is forcing it to. Yet it does exist, and it does so to help those families left behind. They have been a tremendous source of support for us, and after attending their last event, it became clear that they provide that same support to countless other families who have lost loved ones.
Prior to passing away, Josh had purchased a road bike, and it was our plan to start riding and eventually do triathlons together. Now, when I ride or race, I see Josh there with me, and it has become my way of remembering him. My constant prayer since this tragedy unfolded is that the Lord could somehow use this for good.
At a MARSOC Foundation event, I learned of the Miles for MARSOC fundraiser program. This program has given me a tangible way to honor Josh’s memory while also supporting an organization that has done so much for us and other families. By participating in this program, I am not only keeping Josh’s spirit alive but also contributing to a cause that ensures no family, whether Gold Star or active-duty Marine Raider, is left behind.
This year, I will be participating in the Kaiser Permanente Ironman California as a member of The Raider Race Team to raise money for the Marine Raider Foundation. Through this challenging endeavor, I aim to honor Josh’s memory and raise awareness and funds for the Foundation. Your support will help the Marine Raider Foundation continue to provide critical assistance to families who have sacrificed so much, as well as active duty Marine Raiders and their families.
Together, we can honor the memory of SSgt. Joshua Braica and all the brave Marine Raiders who have given their lives in service to our country. All proceeds raised directly support active duty, ill, injured, and transitioning Raiders, their families, and Gold Star families.
Thank you for your generosity and for standing with us in this cause.
