More than 7 inches of rain fell in under 4 hours in Millburn and surrounding areas the night of

September 1, 2021. The rain led to destructive flooding that came with such force that Millburn

businesses and residences experienced unimaginable damage. Small businesses were

unrecognizable when floodwaters receded; building walls were blown out with rushing water,

and basements and storefronts saw up to 5 feet of standing water in them. Like so many of our

Millburn neighbors, the JLOSH building on Main Street flooded, and all of our HVAC systems

housed in the basement were damaged beyond repair.

The morning after Hurricane Ida, JLOSH members showed up in Millburn to not only support

clean-up efforts with our tenant, Splurge Bakery, but clean-up efforts for all of the Millburn

central business community. JLOSH volunteers quickly established “Volunteer Headquarters” in

town, stocked our table with waters, coffee, and snacks, and stepped in to assist first responders

and recovery efforts.

JLOSH members cleared mud out of basements, shoveled invaluable business inventory into the

streets, and worked shoulder to shoulder with volunteers, business owners, and first responders.

In the wake of Ida, JLOSH members did what we do best. We Showed Up!

Now, just a few months post Ida, we are asking that you show up for us. With no insurance

recourse and a budget deficit of approximately $25,000, our ability to continue showing up for

our community is in jeopardy. Of course, our budgets will be leaner this year as we rebuild, but

your support will allow us to fund a modest community impact program, including Community

Grants, and provide membership experiences that align with our mission as a pioneering

women-led leadership development organization. We hope we can count on your support this

year.
