2020 was the ideal time to start a rescue. Everyone was at home wanting a companion to keep them company. They had more time for a furry friend and less time for travel, no plans and very little idea of what was going to happen next. So when we started A Friend of Jack in 2020 we had thousands of applications to sort through. It was overwhelming how many people wanted to adopt. A great problem to have!
Now, if you ask anyone in rescue or animal welfare how things have changed, they would all agree…it’s not good.
We go some days with ZERO adoption applications. We have had barely any donations in the last 6 months and we are still a small enough rescue that regular/consistent donors don’t exist. We are dependent on adoption fees and donations to keep our doors open, and we aren’t doing well.
To give you an idea, in 2021, we had a total of 785 adoptions. In 2022, we had 582, and so far in 2023 we have only had 300 adoptions. It’s very clear that numbers are declining and rescue is just not the same.
The shelters are overcrowded, some are euthanizing dozens of dogs a day. Returns are at an all time high, we receive around 10 owner surrender requests a day and we have less fosters than ever. As a rescue, we are very worried about what our future looks like.
We currently have 58 dogs in our care. Each one requires food and other supplies, medical care, and our bank account is dwindling.
Our medical bills are piling up. From November 1 - 15 we have already spent $5,000 on medical bills, and they're still coming in. So here we are again, asking for help. As we enter the holiday season we know adoptions are going to slow even more. We are asking for donations from our community to help us continue our mission. Whether it’s $5 or $500, it’s helpful. Every penny goes directly to helping save these incredible animals. Please share this fundraiser far and wide! You can donate directly here on Givebutter or our Venmo @afriendofjack.
Thank you for your continued support. We love you all!
