Organized by Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence
Story
The John J. Joyce American Sign Language (ASL) Fund was established by the Joyce family in loving memory of John - a staunch supporter of the Montclair Public Schools and advocate for equality in children's education. Your generous support will fund initiatives to teach ASL to Montclair children and their families through a variety of experiences, including after school activities and community programming.

Research shows that teaching ASL to children - including typically developing hearing children - positively impacts:
• their development of vocabulary, reading and spelling skills
• concentration and memory
• enthusiasm for learning

Children with ADD and Dyslexia experience particular benefits because ASL provides visuals for words and pictures to see and feel. ASL triggers neurological connections beyond those sparked when learning traditional spoken languages. Over 1,000 public high schools nationwide offer ASL courses.

We are honored to support John's Legacy through rich experiences that will not only teach important skills, but also nurture empathy in Montclair's next generation.
