Kitten season has barely begun and we’ve already had our first after-hours emergency situation.

Two nights ago I received a call from Brittany, our Lifesaving Director. Four-month-old Russell Stover was deteriorating fast and we needed to make a decision: either send him to the emergency vet and incur $500+ in fees or hope for the best and see if he makes it through the night at the Bungalow.

Decisions like this are the worst part of rescue, especially in the middle of the night.

In a perfect world, there wouldn’t even be a discussion. No need to get funds approved and no cost-analysis of the outcome vs. available resources. Every day, the Kitty Bungalow staff and I try to make this dream a reality, but we can’t do it without you.

Thanks to the Kitty Bungalow community, we were able to use School Nurse funds to cover Russell’s $508 visit. After an emergency exam and bloodwork, Brittany was able to take him home for the night, knowing that this tiny guy still has a long road ahead. Based on his bloodwork, we now have a second kitten diagnosed with FIP (feline infectious peritonitis).

We’re determined to give sweet Russell the best chance he can to beat this disease, but what about the next time this happens?

Sadly this is the reality of what awaits us as we enter kitten season. Late night calls, emergency team meetings, crunching budget numbers, hearts breaking.

It’s imperative that we prepare for these situations NOW by creating an emergency medical relief fund to get Kitty Bungalow through 2024.

We know this is a lot to ask, and we wouldn’t if we didn’t have to. Our goal is to build a substantial emergency medical fund to cover any veterinary emergencies for the hundreds of kittens we take in this year. Every dollar helps a kitten in need.
