Busler’s Beauties, Benefit Games… and Potential Bovine Smooches
A dynamic personality on air and out in the community, anyone who has watched 7News over the past few decades or attended one of many nonprofit fundraisers in the North Country knows the "Sports Guy," Mel Busler.
Mel began his broadcasting career at WATN radio in 1978 before moving over to 7News in 1982. By 1984, he became the full-time Sports Anchor for the 6 and 11 o’clock news, cementing his place in living rooms across the region.
"I have had the pleasure of covering North Country sports for over 27 years here at 7News," he said. "I was lucky enough to find a career I enjoy and to find that career in my hometown of Watertown."
While Mel takes his responsibilities seriously, he’s always found room for fun, on air and off. His community engagement is as legendary as his sports segments. Whether organizing the beloved Busler’s Beauties or producing the long-running Athlete of the Week segment, Mel has consistently celebrated the heart and humor of local life.
Being from the area, working at 7News has given Mel a front-row seat to making a difference. Over the years, he’s supported numerous causes and organizations, even emceeing our Kentucky Derby Social with fun and flair, and also participated in countless benefit games with the No Stars, a group best known for its questionable sports skills.
Now, Mel’s stepping up (and puckering up) for another great cause: supporting local working families through the ALICE program. A longtime supporter of United Way of Northern New York, Mel is no stranger to our events and enthusiastically signed on to potentially plant a kiss on a cow at the Lewis County Fair.
Though he’s earned awards from the New York State Broadcasters Association, Associated Press, and the Syracuse Press Club, Mel says his proudest achievements are far closer to home. “My wife Rose and our sons, Mel and Matt, are what it’s all about,” he said.
Always up for a laugh, a cause, or a game, Mel offers his gratitude to the community that’s supported him throughout his career:
"Thank you for letting me into your homes, I hope to continue that visit for many years to come," he said.
