McGraw Fellowship Toward Diversity in the Field of Art Therapy

In 1967 Art Therapy Studio co-founders Mickie McGraw and Dr. George Streeter pioneered the novel idea of using art to help hospitalized patients with their prolonged stays and managing their new diagnosis. As the field of Art Therapy started to become more standardized, Mickie was at the forefront of incorporating this newly developed approach to art therapy in a medical setting. A dedicated advocate for people with disabilities, Mickie developed new ways for individuals with disabilities to engage with art, including the now famous “Wheel Art” technique. Her influence on the field of Art Therapy is far reaching in not only advancing the field but in mentoring numerous art therapists throughout her career.

Since its inception, Art Therapy Studio has provided art therapy to the entire community regardless of culture, race, ethnicity, socio-economic class, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, mental health diagnosis, and disability; however the art therapists workforce has not been as diverse as the individuals receiving art therapy. That is why Art Therapy Studio is proud to honor the legacy of Mickie McGraw with the launch of the McGraw Fellowship Toward Diversity in the Field of Art Therapy focused on cultivating and preparing a diverse pool of students to enter the field of art therapy today.

This year-long paid fellowship is designed to increase diversity in the field of art therapy by offering early career support and training to attract and retain individuals from underrepresented and marginalized groups. Fellows will learn from working with established art therapists in a variety of clinical settings to fine-tune their skills and build confidence in their abilities.
