To be clear—neurodivergent isn’t a trend. It’s a truth.

The word neurodivergent was coined in the 1990s by autistic advocate Kassiane Asasumasu and later popularized by Australian sociologist Judy Singer. It emerged from the neurodiversity movement, which boldly challenged the idea that brains that function differently—like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette’s, and more—are disordered. Instead, it affirmed what many of us have always known: our minds aren’t broken—they’re brilliant.

In recent years, the term has gained traction across TikTok, HR departments, academic spaces, and therapy circles. But too often, it’s been watered down—used as a buzzword without the depth or recognition of Black neurodivergent lives and the systemic trauma we navigate daily.
