The Know Your Rights Foundation wasn’t created because it was a good idea — it was created because it was necessary.

For years, we watched people in our families, our neighborhoods, and communities across the country suffer simply because they didn’t know their rights or how to protect themselves during a police encounter.

We saw fear where knowledge should have been.
We saw confusion where clarity could have saved a life.
And we recognized something simple but powerful:
the law is meant to protect people — but only if they understand it.

The stories shared with us, the tragedies we’ve witnessed, and the gaps in public legal education made one truth undeniable:
we cannot wait for someone else to save us. We must educate ourselves.

KYRF was born from that urgency.

What began with determination, research, and a belief that plain-language legal education could save lives has grown into a foundation that provides free tools, workshops, community outreach programs, and essential legal knowledge that empowers families to move through the world safer and more confident.

This work is personal to us.
This work is necessary.
And this work is only possible because of people who believe, as we do, that everyone deserves access to the knowledge that can protect their life.
